Pure Timber fabricated the bentwood Orca from White Oak wood. The scope for Pure Timber included all major bentwood parts, fabrication, and finish work. The finish is Shou Sugi Ban, a Japanese finishing technique that burns the outside of the wood to make it weather resistant. It also gave us a color and texture that was exaclty what was needed for an Orca. The model and inspiration for this Orca is J1, the oldest known Orca in the Pacific Northwest, that passed at the old age of 55+. Client is HighWire Design and The Tacoma Parks Department in Tacoma WA. J1 is on public display at Owen Beach in the 770 acre Point Defiance Park in Tacoma Washington.
